Do not remove covers or attempt electrical repairs yourself. H & G can investigate the fault and explain the safest next step. If there is smoke, fire or immediate danger, get out, stay out and call 999.
RCD will not reset
Do not repeatedly try to reset an RCD that will not stay on. Leave it off and arrange professional fault-finding.
No power in part of the property
Do not remove covers or touch wiring. If a protective device has tripped, leave the affected circuit off and arrange fault-finding.
Hot, loose or damaged socket
Do not touch or use a socket that is hot, loose, damaged or scorched. If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit at the consumer unit and arrange an urgent inspection.
Lights flickering or not working
Switch off the affected light if it is safe to do so. Do not open the fitting; arrange fault-finding if the flickering continues.
Burning smell, buzzing or sparking
Treat these as warning signs of a serious fault. If it is safe to do so, switch off the affected circuit or main supply at the consumer unit. Do not approach hot, smoking or sparking equipment.
